How Trends Work on Social Media
The word trend has many meanings, but it most often refers to the popularity of a topic or hashtag on social media. It can reflect current events, celebrity gossip, memes, or even a brand campaign. Using trends can be a great way to boost engagement for your Twitter posts and attract new followers. By identifying what topics people are interested in and creating content that addresses those topics, you can increase the number of people who retweet your content, comment on it, follow your account, click on your links, or watch your videos. Twitter and other social media platforms offer a feature called “trending” that displays a list of popular topics at any given time. The topics are determined by a combination of factors, including location, the popularity of specific words and phrases, and the collective interests of the Twitter community. Twitter’s trending topics are displayed on the left side of the home page or within the Explore tab. However, YouTube uses a different algorithm to determine what appears on its trending list and can only include channels that have reached a certain number of views or subscribers. Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) also have their own trending features, as do some TikTok creators. Trending on these platforms can be a great way to gain traction with new audiences, but it’s important to use them wisely to avoid being perceived as spammy or annoying.
Some trends are temporary and may come and go quickly. Others can last for a long time, or even become an established part of the culture. A good rule of thumb is to be thoughtful and sensitive when leveraging trends, but don’t be afraid to try out some bold or creative ideas!
