Understanding the Different Types of Love
Love is the feeling of intense affection for another person. It can be for a friend, family member, romantic partner, or even a pet animal. It can also be the reason why you forgive your partner for being late, commit to finishing a project, dream about taking your kids to Disneyland, or feel devastated when your favorite team loses.
The Emotion Of Love
One of the most elusive feelings in human experience, love can be difficult to pin down. Many different theories have been put forward to explain it – such as being a choice or an uncontrollable emotion. Some argue that the feeling is a natural part of life, while others say it’s a cultural trait.
Regardless of what you believe, the word ‘love’ isn’t something that should be thrown around lightly. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a cynic, it’s an important feeling to understand and acknowledge.
There are various types of love, from non-romantic platonic love to intense unconditional love, and it can be difficult to know which type is right for you. Here are some of the most common types of love, according to licensed marriage and family therapist Linda Carroll:
1. Liking Someone You Like
A type of love that’s based on superficial emotions and looks is often called “liking.” This type of attraction might not last long, though. When the people you like change their appearance or their behaviors, your feelings tend to fade away.
2. Feigning Interest in Their Problems
You might be in love with someone who has problems, but you won’t actually do anything about them. You feign interest in their difficulties, but you’re not really interested in the solution to the problem or in solving it for them.
3. Being Comfortable With Problems And Flaws
A type of love that’s mainly emotional and physical is a sign that you’re comfortable with the problems of the person you like. You’re willing to deal with the problem and try to make things work, but you don’t want to walk away if it gets too tough.
4. Wholehearted Love
A kind of love that’s a deep, intense bond is a sign that you are truly in love with the person. This type of love is the most mature and healthy. It is equal, not dominant or passive, and is based on trust and respect.
5. Listening Is Important to You
A kind of love that involves listening to the other person’s thoughts and feelings is a sign that you are truly in tune with them. This type of love is a good sign that you care about them and that they are worth your time and attention.
6. Be Compassionate and Caring
A type of love that reflects compassion, generosity, and caring is a sign that you are really in tune with the other person’s needs. This type of love is a good thing, as it can be a strong bond that can help you through rough times.
