Health Effects of Gambling

gambling

The effects of gambling on health are discussed in a variety of articles. These articles are categorized into four categories: pathological gambling, recreational gambling, life insurance, and sports betting. We used a peer-reviewed database to find the most recent studies on gambling. In our search, we looked for articles published between 1966 and 2001, that were peer-reviewed in English, involved humans, and addressed the health effects of gambling. Articles also discussed screening and treatment strategies for problem gamblers.

Pathological gambling

The DSM-III-R reflects a significant shift in the concept of pathological gambling, incorporating criteria similar to substance use disorders. Pathological gambling syndrome is characterized by preoccupation with gambling, increasing amounts spent, and tolerance, as well as continued gambling despite increasing personal losses. Interestingly, the disorder differs from other disorders that affect impulse control, such as antisocial personality disorder. Listed below are some of the symptoms that indicate pathological gambling.

Recreational gambling

Unlike professional gamblers, recreational gamblers simply play for fun. They gamble for the excitement of the game and for a certain amount of money, but don’t bet a huge sum. They also don’t use their savings to fund their gambling habit. Thus, recreational gamblers are less likely to become addicted to gambling. However, they do need to be aware of certain risks associated with gambling. Here are some tips to keep in mind when playing recreationally.

Life insurance

When you play life insurance for gambling, you aren’t just gambling for fun – you’re also protecting yourself. Gambling is a risky hobby with some positives, but life insurance for gambling will prevent financial hardship if you die prematurely. The cost of life insurance for gambling is often much higher than standard insurance policies. However, the benefits outweigh the risks. The insurance company will provide you with an estimate of your expected life expectancy so that you can choose your premium rate accordingly.

Sports betting

While the US Supreme Court has rejected sports wagering, many professional sports leagues are investing in online gambling and fantasy sports websites. Experts believe that sports betting is gambling kindergarten. The main problem with gambling is that it’s never easy to predict the outcome of a game, so a player’s chance of winning is always a gamble. Thomas Parks, a gambling expert, advised bettors to bet only with money they can afford to lose. Moreover, they should bet only on teams they support.

Horse racing

Legalized sports gambling is gradually expanding across the U.S., but horse racing has been resisting it. A few years ago, horse racing was not so popular, but that is slowly changing. In some states, sports gambling has replaced pari-mutuel wagering. However, horse racing is not alone. A lot of casinos and lotteries have stepped in, and horse racing gambling is likely to have to adapt. But if legalized sports betting makes horse racing gambling more popular, it might need to change its model.
