What Is Love?

Love is a powerful emotion that can transform us and our world. It is a topic that has fascinated philosophers, poets and ordinary people for centuries. It is also a topic that has been the subject of much scientific research. Researchers and psychologists have studied what makes the heart go pitter-patter and why we fall in love. They have come up with theories of attraction and likability, but the truth is that we still don’t know exactly what love is. It is a feeling that is different for each person.

There are many types of love in our lives. Some are romantic, some are platonic, and some are even familial. Love is also an emotion that changes over time. One day you may wake up and feel like your heart could explode from the gushy feeling of love, and the next day you might wake up with the desire to avoid them at all costs. This is normal and okay. Whether it is a deep friendship or a lifelong romance, love should be an ongoing journey.

When we are in the throes of romantic love, our brains are activated in the same way that they are when we take cocaine. The release of a jumble of chemicals, including dopamine, adrenaline and norepinephrine, can make falling in love feel addictive and exciting. As we progress into the stage of attachment, those feelings can shift to a sense of security and closeness that does not involve physiological arousal. Eventually, the hormones that trigger euphoria are replaced by oxytocin, known as the “cuddle” hormone, which helps us to bond and become attached to our loved ones.

The most common type of love is the one we share with our spouse, partner or family. Loving those closest to you requires sacrifice and commitment, but it is a rewarding experience. Being in a loving relationship can teach you to give up your selfish ways and put the needs of others before your own. Love can also be a motivating force to accomplish great things, such as volunteering or serving in the military.

Everyone loves something or someone in this world. It doesn’t have to be between opposite sexes; it can be as simple as loving your pet or a favorite food. The most important thing to remember is that love is not just a feeling, but it can be a way of living and a choice.

When you love someone, you want them to be happy and healthy, so you help them overcome obstacles in their life. You support them, encourage them and forgive them. You give them gifts, take care of their physical and emotional well being, and you respect and protect their privacy. The ultimate sacrifice of love is giving up your own needs and wants for theirs. This is the most selfless form of love and can lead to true happiness. If you want to find out what love really is, look inside yourself and look all around you.
